How to get here

For barbecue near Mesquite, ride LBJ north to Strouderosa BBQ, 9090 Skillman Street in Lake Highlands, Dallas. It is about twenty minutes from downtown Mesquite. Brisket and house-made sausage smoked over pecan, brisket enchiladas and tacos, a Kids & Cowpokes meal for diners 12 and under or 65 and over, churro peach cobbler, and a dining room open Wednesday through Sunday.

The drive from Mesquite

Get on LBJ (I-635) heading north through Mesquite. The freeway bends west past Garland, so stay on it to the Skillman exit and turn south. The pit is just past the freeway, and the card below tells you which door. Plan on about twenty minutes from downtown Mesquite. Full directions and hours live on the location page.

A meal for every generation

The Kids & Cowpokes meal is pint sized on purpose. It is for Buckaroos 12 and under and Cowpokes 65 and over, with a choice of brisket, pulled pork, turkey or sausage and one side, from borracho beans to Mac N Threeso. So a Mesquite family dinner can feed the grandkids and the grandparents without anybody wrestling a full platter. Everyone else orders off the full menu and tries not to look jealous.

Where brisket goes Tex-Mex

Smoked brisket does not stay on the butcher paper here. Brisket enchiladas come two to a plate on flour tortillas, smothered in Threeso, with a side. Brisket tacos get shredded cheese and pico de gallo. The Spuderosa is a large baked potato carrying half a pound of brisket or pulled pork under Threeso, cheese, sour cream and the fixins, which makes it less a side dish than a weekend plan.

Save room for the cobbler

Churro peach cobbler is the reason to leave a little room. Add a scoop of Mexican vanilla bean ice cream and the ride home down LBJ gets very quiet. Feeding a reunion or a church supper instead? Start on the catering page with a date, a headcount and an address, or carry home take-and-bake trays to finish in your own oven.

What to order for the family table

  • Pulled Pork Sandwich: Piled high on a toasted bun, slaw on the side.
  • BBQ Borracho Beans: Slow-simmered beans with pico on top and a little swagger.
  • Green Beans w/ Bacon: The vegetable the Buckaroos will actually eat. Bacon helps.

The rest of the board is on the menu, with every price on the price list.
